By engaging Carbon, not-for-profit Perth City Farm can provide confidence to their board that their tax compliance requirements are being met
Perth City Farm is a non-profit community environmental centre (located opposite Claisebrook train station in East Perth) that provides space and opportunities to build community connections, and educates and enables people to live sustainably.
They have an operational community garden and nursery run by a team of dedicated workers and volunteers, and sell their plants and produce to the general public and local restaurants. Every Saturday morning, they play host to the popular Saturday Farmers Market to showcase their wonderful garden produce, nursery items and a number of certified organic products from their ‘Farm Door Shop.’ Perth City Farm run various educational programs for adults and children, teaching a range of skills including permaculture gardening, food preservation, recycled crafts and animal husbandry. They also play host to a wide variety of community events, festivals and conferences. They hire out our venue for private functions, such as weddings, which fund our environmental and community endeavours.
Perth City Farm was previously a branch of the not-for-profit organisation Men of The Trees, which is now known as Trillion Trees. In 2017, Perth City Farm separated from Men of The Trees and became a separate not-for-profit organisation with its own constitution and board.
They were already using Carbon’s services whilst part of Men of The Trees and decided to continue that relationship as a separate business. Perth City Farm engaged Carbon to assist with ensuring our accounts were established correctly from the beginning and to provide continual bookkeeping and payroll support. Carbon was also engaged to provide the financial knowledge and support that Perth City Farm’s small, part-time workforce needs to be financially successful and to provide confidence to the board that the accounts were being prepared correctly and all tax compliance requirements were being met. Being a self-funded community organisation, it is vital that their finances are correct to ensure they can sustainably pursue their environmental and social mission.
Men of Trees were initially using desktop-based accounting software MYOB, before converting to Xero in 2015, allowing the team at Perth City Farm to access their accounts on the go. By engaging Carbon, they wanted the advice and expertise to support their internal accounts role to ensure the financial reports for the business are completed correctly. Perth City Farm saw having an external bookkeeping service as good governance/internal control to ensure that the finances of their business were being accounted for correctly, reducing the risk of fraud occurring.
Carbon support Perth City Farm with bookkeeping and payroll services. Working with their internal accounts provides the team with the confidence and reassurance that they are still in control of their accounts, while receiving strong support from our bookkeepers.
Working with Xero has been a game changer for Perth City Farm. The ability to give board members access means they can look at the numbers in real time and provides better transparency on the financial performance of the organisation and allows better decisions to be made. It allows the team to meet all of their financial reporting requirements with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Commission, and with the Australian Tax Office, giving them peace of mind that they are financially sustainable so they can focus on their mission of educating people on environmental sustainability.
The nursery at Perth City Farm
is, like all our other areas, almost entirely run by volunteers. The team grow a variety of seasonal herbs, vegetables and flowers, and a range of unusual, medicinal and useful plants.
Leave your grocery shopping until Saturday morning and head on down to Perth City Farm
to visit their vibrant market.
“Carbon is an integral part of our support network for achieving our organisation’s mission. We continually receive knowledgeable, timely and generous assistance from both the bookkeeping team - in Aimie and Bridie - and the payroll team as we transform from a branch of the organisation Men of The Trees into our own separate not for profit organisation. The ongoing services provided have given us enormous confidence in our financial stability and ensure we fulfil all our legal and tax compliance obligations. We would recommend their services to any not-for-profit organization.”
