Partner Perspective – Michelle Maynard

We’re kicking off each month with an interview from one of the eight Carbon partners to get an insight into what it is like working at Carbon Group, what their business values are, workplace tips and some interesting facts about each of them!

This week our Head of Marketing sat down with one of our newest partners in our accounting division Michelle Maynard to ask her some thought provoking questions.

How long have you been with Carbon? What made you choose Carbon?
I have been with Carbon since November 2017. Carbon is unlike any Accounting Firm I have ever worked for. I watched their rapid expansion for around 9 months before I contemplated coming on board. They are innovative, young, technologically driven and approach their business with a passion I haven’t seen in other accountants.

What is your favourite aspect of Carbon Business group?
My favourite aspect of Carbon is the people. My fellow Partners are personable, fun and driven. They are supportive and forward thinking. Being so new in business, it is amazing to have access to such successful people to mentor me. But not only the Partners – the staff of Carbon are also of the highest quality. Fun and witty – coming to work does not feel like work at all!

What’s your top 3 tips for effectively managing your tax each year?
Record keeping – make sure you keep on top of your records. Keep receipts and invoices – either electronically or physically.
Bookkeeping – have some sort of bookkeeping in place. We highly recommend Xero as it is user friendly and understandable. Using a software like Xero will allow you to monitor how your business is going all throughout the year.
Tax Planning – undertake tax planning with your accountant in around March. This is an exercise where we look at how your business has performed in the year to date and forecast the last quarter. We then look at strategies we can implement to reduce your tax liability and give you the steps to implement. I am yet to do this for a client and not save them in tax!

What’s one thing someone can do to save time before they meet with an accountant in order to maximise time?
Make sure their records are in good order.
Be in constant contact with their accountant throughout the year – Carbon encourage our clients to discuss business issues as they arise, not just at the end of the year, so we can help out in real time. By having regular contact, we can make sure we provide the real and timely advice that will benefit our clients.

It was fantastic sitting down with Michelle to hear what she had to say about what Carbon’s workplace is like from her perspective as a partner. Stay tuned for next month’s partner perspective blog.
