While working on their new game, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, Black Lab Games wanted to explore the R&D tax incentive.

After having a chat with Carbon’s R&D Partner Maitreya Speering, Black Lab Games identified that there were several components of the game’s development that may qualify for the R&D tax incentive and, therefore, earn the company a cash refund.

Carbon helped to prepare the project description addressing the criteria required to be an eligible R&D project. The costs incurred throughout the financial year were assessed, and the end result was a healthy cash refund to Black Lab Games, equivalent to 43.5% of the R&D expenditure identified.

Key results
  • Additional funds enabled Black Lab Games to hire a new staff member.
  • Black Lab Games then had the funds to develop their next video game.
