Carbon Group hosted their annual big poker night last week, as a way to get the community together and have fun, all whilst raising awareness and funds for St Vincent de Paul Society.
The event was held at The Rise in Maylands, where close to 100 guests joined Carbon Group and WA Poker League, making the event a huge success.
The evening began with an informal speech from a Vinnie’s WA representative, who touched on what the charity do as a reminder of the purpose of the evening. The St Vincent de Paul Society involves thousands of volunteers who share their time, care for humanity and energy to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged people all around Australia. They provide a helping hand to many West Australians through food assistance, material aid, budget advice, shelter, advocacy, friendship and support.
Players included a mix of Carbon’s clients, the local community, and avid poker enthusiasts from across Perth. Whilst Carbon covered the cost of the event, ticket sales went towards a prize pool for the top eight players, and drink and raffle sales went straight to the fundraising total. It was a close finish, but Ryan McCreery took top place, walking away with a $2,000 cash prize. Second place went to Media Stable’s Nic Hayes, who received a $1,000 cash prize. A raffle was organised, with Carbon’s clients donating gifts, including Grill’d Shafto Lane, Pigeonhole and Grazie Gifts to name a few.
The highlight of the night was totalling the donations, which amounted to a just over $5,000. Carbon’s founding partner, Jamie Davison, said it’s important for businesses to support charities and give back to the community.
“Participating in charity work gives you a real feel-good factor, and businesses should actively get involved in any way they can. That could be making donations, or getting involved in events such as Oxfam’s 100km Trailwalker or Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout. Carbon organise annual events such as this poker one and our upcoming Bogan Bingo night as we can leverage our clients to increase exposure and therefore raise awareness even more, and ultimately increase the amount of money we can raise for the given charity.”
Carbon’s annual Bogan Bingo night is set to return on Friday 16th June this year, raising funds for Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout.
